January 13 Update
Lots more snow! The promised snowsqualls finally arrived Monday afternoon – and it sure did snow! And along with it came cold temperatures, so a perfect mix to top up our conditions. Our groomers have been out in full force working on getting the trails in top condition for the weekend. You can look forward to all lifts and all trials open for the weekend, with the exception of Northwest Passage, which relies solely on natural snow and needs just a bit more to be ready for skiing. Snowshoeing will also be fantastic!
Here’s this week’s update:
Last Call! Volunteer Opportunity - Nominating Committee
The Club is seeking a member to join the Nominating Committee, with the position to be filled by random draw from the applications received. The deadline to apply has been extended briefly, to Friday January 14th at 12:00 noon.
If you would like to apply, please send an email in confidence to Natalie Bennett via
[email protected], . Please include:
Although the position available on the Nominating Committee will be filled by random draw, volunteers must nonetheless submit a brief summary of their history and activities at the Club and their reason for volunteering.
A member volunteering for this position must be a first or second family member or a single member, in good standing and not on inactive status. Intermediate members are not eligible to serve as members of this committee.
The Nominating Committee’s Terms of Reference outline, among other items, the length of service for members and the selection process followed as part of the ongoing rotation of committee members. The rotation begins for the upcoming season and, as noted in the
Report of the Nominating Committee 2021, this year Anne Miller, one of the three committee members selected at random, will be retiring and her position will be filled through this call. Kathryn Del Greco (Chair), Warren Finlay and Ross Kappele will also be retiring, and their positions will be filled as described in the terms of reference. Tammy Comish (selected by the Chair), and Paul Fox and Julian Pope (selected by random draw) will continue as members of the committee for one more year. We thank all of the members of the Nominating Committee for their excellent work over the past two years.
Ski Across With Alpine
The Ski Across remains postponed due to a lack of snow at the cut across sections – keep in mind, the snow we have received has been plentiful, but of the “light and fluffy" variety so it takes a lot to pack down for skiing. Northwest Passage remains closed also for the same reason, and it is a “natural snow only” run. Stay tuned, we will let you know when the ski across resumes.
Cross Country Skiing Is Back!
Thanks to all the new snow, our cross country trail at the top is now open. The trail has been groomed, and the track setting will take place prior to the weekend.
Best access the cross country trails - drive up via Scenic Caves Road, turn at Banks and access the trails by parking at the sharp bend in the road - look for the yellow gate.
You can climb up Backstairs with your skis on or carrying them. To come back down, access is via Backstairs only, walking down carrying your skis. Skiing down on cross county skis is not permitted on any trail, including Backstairs.
Lastly, you can ride the Funnel Chair on Sunday afternoon after 2 p.m. You will ride as a foot passenger, carrying your skis. Riding is "up" only, access down would be walking down Backstairs as noted above.
Note that chair access applies to Snowshoers also - Sunday afternoon, after 2 pm, "up" only, access down via the snowshoe trails or Backstairs.
Ski Telemark Returns
Ski Telemark returns this Sunday - a fun opportunity to try a new alternative sport or build on your skills. Look for them at the bottom of the National Chair.
Register in advance with this form.

Light Yourself Up! And Slow Down!
My annual reminder to those who enjoy an early morning or evening run, or a walk with the dog – please wear as much reflective clothing as you can. It is very difficult for drivers to see pedestrians in the morning or evening when its fully dark, at dawn or dusk – so be safe and light up – including your pet too! And drivers – a reminder to watch your speed especially on Craigleith Road. Lots of pedestrians, driveways and other traffic on the road – so take it easy and arrive safely.

Upcoming By-Law Review
The Governance Committee has begun a review of the Club's by-law and related documents. This is because the Not-for-profit Corporations Act (Ontario), referred to as ONCA, which was passed in 2010, was finally proclaimed in force on 19 October 2022ONCA applies immediately, but the Club has three years to restate its letters patent as articles of incorporation and revise its by-law, in each case to comply with ONCA. The required review of the by-law is also an opportunity to consider changes that aren’t required by ONCA but are raised by members or identified by the Governance Committee.
The Board anticipates the following timeline for the review:
- 2021 / 22 season - Governance Committee collects member requests, reviews required decisions, develops drafts and reports to the Board
- 2022 annual meeting - update to members
- 2022 / 23 season - Governance Committee consults with members through open house and forum sessions in person and/or online
- April 2023 - Governance Committee reports to the Board with recommended by-law and other documents
- 2023 annual meeting - member approval is sought based on detailed report and drafts provided in advance of meeting
- Following 2023 annual meeting - restated articles of incorporation are filed and new by-law becomes effective
Members are asked to submit questions or suggestions concerning by-law revisions to
[email protected] by 28 February 2022. We don't want to change the Club fundamentally, but we really don't want last minute surprises. Please read the current by-law on the Club website before making suggestions so you understand what may be relevant. (The price of beer at the bar isn't a subject for the by-law.) Please also be patient regarding answers, as it may be next season before full discussion takes place.
See you on the weekend!
